It was given this name because it was discovered on the Spanish Feast of Flowers. Then in the year 1565 St. Augustine became a European settlement, considered widely, the United States’ oldest city. The state of Florida gained statehood on March 3, 1845. Throughout the final portion of the nineteenth century, large-scale agriculture and commercially-based agriculture, like cattle-raising, became of the highest importance to the state’s economy. Word War II gave Florida another financial and economic boost, because of its consistent climate it became a year-round training base for U.S. soldiers and their allies. Florida has come to be known for its beach resorts, warm and sunny weather and amusement parks. The state is also a boater’s dream with several lakes and access to the warm Atlantic and Gulf waters, and has several wildlife preservation areas and parks. The appeal of these parks and reserves attract animal lovers of all kinds.
